Hanuman Ansh took Rs 5 crore in India on Friday, its 43rd day, more than Daayra and Vibe made together. Sacnilk logged the holdover on 6,462 shows at 18.72 percent occupancy, after a 20.0 percent drop from Thursday.

Meghna Gulzar’s Daayra opened at Rs 90 lakh. Kunal Kemmu’s Vibe opened at Rs 1.50 crore. Combined, that is Rs 2.40 crore, on 5,432 shows. The film that began on 7 August at Rs 10 lakh still owned the day.

The Seventh Friday That Out-Earned Two Openings

Friday is supposed to be when new titles take the inventory. Exhibitors did cut Hanuman Ansh, from 9,160 shows on Thursday to 6,462, a loss of 2,698 shows, to make room for the arrivals. The cut was not a handover. The 43-day-old film still ran 1,030 more shows than Daayra and Vibe combined, and it still filled a higher share of seats.

Sacnilk’s India nett total for Vishal Chaturvedi’s Neem Karoli Baba drama now stands at Rs 248.38 crore, with India gross at Rs 293.30 crore. Overseas added Rs 1.25 crore on Friday, taking that tally to Rs 23.00 crore and worldwide gross to Rs 316.30 crore. Production was reported at Rs 1.8 crore.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18

Film India nett Shows Occupancy Certificate
Hanuman Ansh (Day 43) Rs 5.00 crore 6,462 18.72% U
Vibe (Day 1) Rs 1.50 crore 3,194 13.38% A
Daayra (Day 1) Rs 90 lakh 2,238 11.65% A

Per show, the holdover also led. Rs 5.00 crore on 6,462 shows beats Rs 1.50 crore on 3,194 and Rs 90 lakh on 2,238. The new films did not lose only because they received fewer slots. They lost because the slots they received stayed empty.

Daayra’s Hindi Occupancy Stops at 11.65%

Daayra is Kareena Kapoor’s first film with Malayalam star Prithviraj Sukumaran, and Gulzar’s return to a cop story built on a public crime. She plays DCP Ajooni Kohli, an officer who wants the file to move through the courts. He plays DCP Raman Kumar, who has stopped trusting that path. The makers call it inspired by true events. The Central Board of Film Certification passed it on 11 September with an A certificate and a runtime of 143 minutes and 16 seconds, Kareena’s tenth adult-rated film.

Hindi occupancy on opening day was 11.65 percent across 2,238 shows. Morning shows sat at 5.31 percent, afternoon at 11.08 percent, evening at 11.92 percent, and night at 16.31 percent, the best slot and still a thin house. A Malayalam version ran beside the Hindi print and added only a small share, with occupancy near 10.85 percent. India gross was about Rs 1.08 crore.

That opening sits below The Buckingham Murders, the Hansal Mehta film that had been her recent floor at Rs 1.15 crore nett on day one in 2024. Reviews gave the leads credit and then pointed at a second half that keeps Ajooni and Raman apart until the end. The audience that has to be 18 to buy a ticket did not show up in numbers that pay for a wide crime thriller.

Vibe Wins a Family Scrap on Thin Houses

Vibe is Kemmu’s second film as director after Madgaon Express, and he stars in it with Sparsh Shrivastava and Preity Zinta. Preity’s part is her second film since she returned, after Batwara 1947. The plot follows two friends, Hardik and Bugs, who get pulled into an intelligence job. Sharmila Tagore is in the cast; Kemmu directed his mother-in-law. The board also gave Vibe an A, at 2 hours 26 minutes, a surprise for a comic caper in the zone of a film that had gone out U/A.

Sacnilk put the opening at Rs 1.50 crore from 3,194 shows, with India gross at Rs 1.80 crore. Hindi occupancy was 13.38 percent. Morning shows were 6.00 percent, afternoon 11.31 percent, evening 13.92 percent, night 22.31 percent. It matched Madgaon Express on day one and finished ahead of Ek Din and Main Vaapas Aaunga, which had opened at Rs 1.15 crore each. Ahead of two soft openers is not the same as filling a Friday.

WHERE VIBE’S HOUSES WERE LEAST EMPTY

  • Chennai: 21.3 percent occupancy across 28 shows, with night at 40.0 percent.
  • Bengaluru: 17.3 percent across 144 shows, night at 38.0 percent.
  • Mumbai: 16.0 percent across 328 shows, night at 30.0 percent.
  • NCR: 14.8 percent across 446 shows, the largest city load on the slate.
  • Surat: 5.0 percent across 128 shows, the worst of the tracked centres.

Kareena and Kemmu are in-laws. At Daayra’s trailer launch she praised his comic timing, said there was room for both films, and joked that the gold would come home either way. Trade chatter on Saturday treated the clash as a family match. The seats did not. Vibe beat Daayra and still lost Friday to a film with no star billing.

29 Shows on the Eighth Day

Hanuman Ansh is a 150-minute U-rated Hindi biopic, written, directed and produced by Chaturvedi from his book Divine Detour: That Changed My Life. Shobhinaw Satyaa, who had been the second assistant director, took the lead as Lakshmi Narayan after the first actor fell ill in the opening schedule. Vihaan Shedge plays the boy; Chandan Anand, Purnima Tiwari and Anil Rastogi round out the main cast. Cinépolis India distributed it nationwide, with Panorama Studios in Delhi-UP, after a postponement from 31 July to 7 August.

Anupriya Nagar, 21, an economics graduate from the University of Bath, is one of four producers with Ragini Sona, Namrata G. Singh and Chaturvedi, under Swambhu Media Network and Holy Cow Home Productions. She has said she put in one-third of the Rs 1.8 crore budget, not the whole sum. The other two women producers put in the rest of that split. There was no real publicity budget. Chaturvedi later said the campaign was eight bhandaras, and that the board issued a U certificate without a fight.

HANUMAN ANSH WEEK BY WEEK

  1. 7 August 2026: Opens at Rs 0.10 crore from 355 shows at 10.0 percent occupancy.
  2. 13 August 2026: Week 1 closes at Rs 1.08 crore as shows slide to 262.
  3. 14 August 2026: Day 8 falls to Rs 0.04 crore from 29 shows, even as occupancy jumps to 35.0 percent.
  4. 21 to 27 August 2026: Week 3 collects Rs 10.40 crore after word of mouth turns, with Day 17 at Rs 2.20 crore.
  5. 28 August to 3 September 2026: Week 4 adds Rs 61.00 crore; Day 24, a Sunday, hits Rs 12.75 crore.
  6. 4 to 10 September 2026: Week 5 is the peak at Rs 90.25 crore, including Rs 22.75 crore on 6 September.
  7. 11 to 17 September 2026: Week 6 holds at Rs 80.25 crore, with Thursday still at Rs 6.25 crore from 9,160 shows.
  8. 18 September 2026: Day 43 takes Rs 5 crore across 6,462 shows at 18.72 percent occupancy.

Those week totals add to Rs 248.38 crore. On Day 9, with only 30 shows left, occupancy hit 74.0 percent. On Day 10 it hit 85.0 percent on 31 shows. The film was not dying. It was trapped on too few screens, which is the opposite problem from Daayra’s 2,238 thinly filled shows.

Week Two Nearly Wiped the Release

Distributor notes put the first footprint near 250 screens, then near 40 in week two, in line with Sacnilk’s drop to 29 shows on Day 8. Nagar has said she got a call that the film might not be in theatres the next day. She was less worried about the money than about nobody watching. Other films that weekend, Awarapan 2 and Batwara 1947, had kept the known faces and the known directors, and they had kept the screens.

Word of Mouth Forced the Screens Back

Cinépolis tracked the title centre by centre. Where occupancy held, shows stayed. Where bookings built, shows were added, and the film went back into towns it had left. By early September it was on more than 2,000 screens across chains and independent cinemas. Hombale Films took overseas rights and opened it abroad on 11 September. Uttarakhand made it tax-free after Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami watched it in Dehradun on 5 September. Chaturvedi has already said work on a second part, covering Agra and Mathura, has begun.

Cinépolis Held the Film When Stars Arrived

The stakeholder who changed Friday was not a lead actor. It was the distributor that refused the usual two-weekend kill. Devang Sampat, managing director of Cinépolis India, said the per-screen numbers in week two were the tell, and that a run should be shaped by demand rather than by the calendar of new releases.

Most films get judged in two weekends. The data on this one told us to wait. When we consolidated to 40 screens in the second week, per-screen collections nearly tripled, which told us the film was holding its audience. So we rebuilt the release around that demand, centre by centre.

Devang Sampat, Managing Director, Cinépolis India

Chaturvedi said the Cinépolis team kept calling theatres, checking occupancies, and feeding those figures back. Namrata Singh called the same support the reason the film got the reach it needed. Sampat later put the fifth-week jump in plainer terms: marketing can buy the first weekend, only the film can buy the fifth, and that weekend the daily nett rose Friday to Sunday. On Friday 18 September, with two star vehicles in the next hall, night occupancy on Hanuman Ansh was still 27.08 percent. Daayra’s night slot was 16.31 percent. Vibe’s was 22.31 percent, its best hour, and still behind a film in its seventh week.

Adult Certificates Meet a U-Rated Crowd

Both new films are adults-only. Hanuman Ansh is U. That split is not a side note on a weekend when families are the ones who can still be pulled to a saint’s life story on a seventh Friday. Daayra’s A is easy to defend: rape, murder, a police encounter, juvenile crime. Vibe’s A is the stranger call, and it locked children out of a comedy that needed a broader door.

NCR still carried 805 Hanuman Ansh shows on Friday at 18.3 percent occupancy. Mumbai had 383 at 17.0 percent. Those are holdover numbers in the same cities where Vibe’s 446 NCR shows and 328 Mumbai shows could not clear 16 percent. The faith audience that found the biopic in week three did not migrate to a cop thriller or a spy lark because two famous names arrived.

Some viewers describe a screening as darshan, which is a different product from either new film. Nagar has said that if the same story had been made at Rs 10 crore it would have lost the rawness. The Rs 1.8 crore cost is now a rounding error against Rs 248.38 crore nett, and the people who put that money up were three women producers plus the director, not a studio slate fighting for opening-day vanity.

Kareena’s Gold Line Lands on Empty Friday

Kareena’s line at the trailer launch was meant as a family joke. “And the gold will come to our home only, so I will be very happy if both films do well and I’m very, very sure that both films are going to do very well,” she said. Kemmu had already admitted that nobody wants a clash. On 18 September the gold went to a film whose lead was a former assistant director, whose distributor had almost pulled it in week two, and whose certificate let parents buy tickets without an age argument.

Daayra can still hope that night occupancy at 16.31 percent is a floor a crime film can climb if talk builds. Vibe can still hope that 22.31 percent at night is a comedy finding its crowd a slot late. Neither opening matches the holdover’s Rs 5.00 crore on 6,462 shows, and neither occupancy matches 18.72 percent in week seven. The new-release privilege on Friday is now conditional on exhibitors actually letting go of the film that is already paying.
