Nifty Slides to a Six-Month Low as Oil Hits India
The Nifty 50 closed at 22,780.25 as Brent jumped to $108.3, foreign funds sold, and dollar earners such as Infosys still finished higher.
The Nifty 50 fell 1.56% to 22,780.25 on September 28, a near six-month low, as Brent jumped to $108.3. The Sensex dropped 1,124.02 points, or 1.52%, to 72,771.72, its weakest close since March 30. Infosys and Dr Reddy’s Laboratories still finished higher. Banks, autos and power stocks did not.
The session was the local pass-through of a closed Strait of Hormuz, a 5.2% U.S. 10-year yield and a rupee that slipped back toward 96. Gold fell with equities. India VIX rose, and still closed in the low teens.
Nifty Closes at 22,780 After a Broad Selloff
The index opened at 23,064.90 and finished near its 22,762.20 low. Forty-seven of the 50 Nifty members closed down. On the Sensex, 29 of 30 stocks fell, and Infosys was the only gainer in that pack. Nifty Bank dropped 1.99% to 54,471.65. The Nifty PSU Bank index led sector losses, down 3.24%.

Mid-caps and small-caps lagged the headline drop, and the tape was thin on the upside. On the BSE, 2,866 stocks fell, 1,297 rose and 209 were unchanged. Investor wealth on listed shares dropped ₹7.52 lakh crore in the session. Since August 27 the Sensex is down 4,161.87 points, or 5.40%, and the Nifty is down 1,310.60 points, or 5.44%, a one-month hit of ₹17.17 lakh crore.
Friday had offered a small bounce. The Nifty had gained 77.40 points, or 0.34%, to 23,140.50, and the Sensex had added 315.20 points, or 0.43%, to 73,895.74. That still completed a seventh straight weekly decline, with the Nifty off about 0.9% for the week ended September 25. Monday took out 22,800 anyway.
Trump’s Hormuz Rebuff Puts Brent Over $108
Brent, the global benchmark Indian desks watch, jumped 3.81% to $108.3 a barrel during the session. The move followed U.S. President Donald Trump’s rejection on September 26 of Iran’s offer to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and halt fighting within seven days. The waterway has been effectively shut since the war began on February 28, and about a fifth of seaborne oil and gas usually moves through it in peacetime.
I reject their proposal. They want to make a deal to open the Hormuz Strait immediately because they’re losing so badly.
Donald Trump, U.S. President, White House remarks, September 26
Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, tied that rebuff straight to the Indian close.
The US rejection of the ceasefire proposal has heightened concerns that tensions in West Asia could persist for longer than anticipated, reducing the likelihood of a near-term diplomatic resolution and increasing the risk of prolonged supply-side disruptions and higher commodity prices.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited
Dr V. K. Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at the same firm, had framed the bind before the close, with Brent then near $106: external headwinds were overpowering domestic tailwinds, he said, and a U.S. 10-year yield at 5.2% sat beside oil as a second weight on the market. Those two prices, plus the rupee, hit rate-sensitive and import-heavy stocks from the same side.
THREE PRICES THAT HIT THE TAPE TOGETHER
- Brent crude: The benchmark jumped 3.81% to $108.3 a barrel after the Hormuz talks stalled.
- U.S. 10-year yield: The Treasury yield around 5.2% pulled money toward dollar bonds and away from Indian equities.
- The rupee: The dollar-rupee rate ended at 95.98, 16 paise weaker than Friday’s 95.82 close.
A weaker rupee makes every imported barrel cost more in local currency, which is why autos, lenders and power names moved first. IT and listed exporters get paid in dollars, so they had a built-in offset the rest of the index did not.
Foreign Funds Sold as Domestic Funds Bought
Provisional exchange figures show foreign funds sold ₹5,353.22 crore across NSE, BSE and MSEI on September 28, against purchases of ₹9,047.56 crore. Domestic institutions bought a net ₹5,189.02 crore. The two flows nearly cancelled. The index still lost 22,800 because the local bid was a shade smaller than the foreign sale, and because oil and yields were still rising into the close.
That pattern has been the September tape. Foreign investors sold ₹20,695 crore of equities in September through September 28, NSDL figures show, after they bought ₹20,200 crore in July and ₹29,631 crore in August, a two-month inflow of ₹49,831 crore. For calendar 2026, net equity sales stand at ₹245,136 crore. Friday’s provisional sale was ₹3,693.93 crore.
Nair said rising U.S. yields are narrowing the India-U.S. yield gap and can keep that selling in place. Vijayakumar noted that foreign investors, after those two buying months, had turned sellers again and that this would keep the market under pressure in the near term. The domestic bid is large, and it is not large enough to hold 22,800 when crude is above $100.
Autos Hit Lows While Infosys Stayed Green
The split inside the Nifty was the tell. Dr Reddy’s Laboratories rose 1.67%, or ₹20, to ₹1,221.00, and was the day’s strongest Nifty name. Nomura kept a Buy rating with a ₹1,740 target, pointing to a pending U.S. FDA clearance for a biologics plant and to an intravenous biosimilar Abatacept filing. Infosys added 0.46%, or ₹4.60, to ₹1,004.80. Hero MotoCorp gained 0.26%, or ₹14, to ₹5,374.00. Those three were the Nifty’s only closers in the green.
NIFTY GAINERS AND THE STEEPEST LOSERS
| Stock | Close (₹) | Change | % change | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dr Reddy’s Laboratories | 1,221.00 | +20.00 | +1.67% | Top Nifty gainer |
| Infosys | 1,004.80 | +4.60 | +0.46% | Only Sensex gainer |
| Hero MotoCorp | 5,374.00 | +14.00 | +0.26% | Third Nifty gainer |
| Jio Financial Services | 219.40 | -7.60 | -3.35% | 52-week low |
| Adani Enterprises | 2,820.00 | -96.50 | -3.31% | Heavyweight drag |
| Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles | 281.65 | -8.80 | -3.03% | 3-year low |
Jio Financial Services fell to a 52-week low. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, the passenger-car listing after the group’s 2025 split, closed at a three-year low of ₹281.65. Larsen & Toubro dropped 2.81% to ₹3,770.00, the worst Sensex name. Power Grid Corporation lost 2.62% to ₹262.20. HDFC Bank fell 2.3%, Hindustan Unilever 2.27%, Reliance Industries 2.24% and Adani Ports 2.38%. Ponmudi R, chief executive of Enrich Money, said selling stayed broad-based and that the wider market underperformed the frontline indices.
India’s Crude Basket Is Already Above $115
The Nifty print is late relative to the oil bill. The Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell, under the oil ministry, says the Indian crude basket averaged $115.48 a barrel so far in September, against $90.19 in August and $82.04 in July. The basket stood at $123.67 on September 24. India still buys more than 88% of the crude it refines.
HOW THE OIL SHOCK REACHED THE CLOSE
- February 28, 2026: Fighting begins and Iran closes the Strait of Hormuz; freight on the Ras Tanura-to-India run later jumps more than 400%.
- April to August 2026: The crude import bill hits $74.8 billion, up 48.4% and $24.4 billion more than a year earlier, while volumes slip 0.4% to 100.7 million tonnes from 101.1 million.
- September 26, 2026: Trump rejects Iran’s seven-day plan to reopen the strait.
- September 28, 2026: Brent jumps 3.81% to $108.3 and the Nifty closes at 22,780.25.
Volumes barely moved. The extra dollars are price, freight and a weaker rupee, not a boom in demand. State Bank of India’s group chief economic advisor, Soumya Kanti Ghosh, has said that once landed costs push through $110 a barrel, the import bill becomes hard to sustain. CareEdge Ratings has put the crude level at which an integrated fuel retailer’s operating profit turns negative, if pump prices stay frozen, near $115 a barrel. September’s basket average is already there.
Gold Fell With Equities as the Rupee Slipped
December gold futures dropped 3.07%, or $132.45, to $4,188.75 a troy ounce, a selloff that does not fit a classic flight from stocks into metal. The U.S. dollar index futures added 0.17% to 100.88. The rupee’s official dollar-rupee spot fix on the Clearing Corporation of India was 95.9643, with a session high of 96.05 and a low of 95.80, in line with the 95.98 onshore close.
THE VOLATILITY PRINT
- India VIX close: 13.64, up 1.48 points, or 12.15%, from 12.16.
- Intraday range: 12.16 to 14.15, a one-month high for the gauge.
- One-year band: 8.86 to 28.91, so the jump still sits in the lower half of the year’s range.
A 1.56% Nifty drop with VIX still at 13.64 is a price adjustment, not a vol explosion. Option markets raised the cost of protection. They did not price a crash. Nair said bears were firmly in control after the market broke a key psychological support, and that the tone would stay cautious while West Asia stays unresolved and U.S. yields stay high. The strait is still closed, Brent is still above $100, and that is the set of prices the Nifty takes into the next session.
