Ace Combat 8 Brings the Belkan War to Xbox

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve hits Xbox on October 2, with Deluxe access September 28 and Ace Combat Zero bundled on every pre-order, not as a remaster.

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve launches October 2 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam. Deluxe owners can fly from September 28 at 3:00 p.m. PDT, which is September 29 on European and Japanese calendars.

Every digital pre-order also adds the 2006 campaign Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War, plus an unlocked F-14A. That 20-year-old war is the real hook on Xbox, because this is the first time Zero has a Series X|S version at all.

What Every Ace Combat 8 Pre-Order Includes

Bandai Namco Aces built the new game in Unreal Engine 5 with its own Cloudly sky tech, and the publisher calls it the first mainline Ace Combat in seven years. The Standard Edition is $69.99. The Deluxe Edition is $89.99. The store-exclusive Joker Flight Pack is $149.99 and stacks vinyl records and a 200-page “Aces at War: A History 2029” artbook on top of Deluxe.

Zero is not a Deluxe extra. Bandai Namco says all digital preorders include Ace Combat Zero and the F-14A, on every platform, if you buy before launch. The company still sells that 2006 game as the origin story of its Strangereal setting and as the debut of the Ace Style gauge, which shifted radio chatter, rival aces and the ending based on how you fought.

It is also not new paint on old code in the way fans use the word remaster. Bandai Namco Europe states the Zero port is not a remaster or an updated rebuild. The Xbox listing even warns that Zero’s language set (Japanese, English, French, Italian, German and Spanish) may not match Ace Combat 8. You are buying a modern-console copy of a PlayStation 2 campaign, and the publisher is using it to move a $69.99 sequel.

THE ACE COMBAT 8 EDITIONS

Edition Price Zero and F-14A Early access Extra
Standard $69.99 Yes, on digital pre-order No Base game only
Deluxe $89.99 Yes, on digital pre-order 3 days from September 28, 3:00 p.m. PDT Cosmetic set and Premium Ace Pass Plus voucher
Joker Flight Pack $149.99 Yes, on digital pre-order Same 3-day window as Deluxe Deluxe contents plus vinyl set and 200-page artbook

That $20 step from Standard to Deluxe buys time and a season of the new Ace Pass, not the old game. The $60 step to the Joker Flight Pack is merch. If you want Zero, the cheap door is still the $69.99 pre-order.

Joker Flight Lives on the Carrier Endurance

The new campaign is set in July 2029. The Republic of Sotoa has overrun the Federation of Central Usea, and the aging carrier Endurance is one of the scraps still afloat, decks crowded with refugees. You fly under the name Wings of Theve, a manufactured ace tied to the FCU capital, with three named wingmen in Joker Flight.

The Joker Flight roster on the official site is more specific than a briefing-room silhouette. Commander Jan Cope holds the Wings of Theve callsign at the start, a legend the write-up says was not real. He was picked for a fake-ace project because he could dodge, and he gambled badly in his downtime. After he goes down, the player inherits the name, because the propaganda still needs a face.

JOKER FLIGHT AND THE ENDURANCE

  • Jan Cope: Commander and original Wings of Theve, a built hero whose private life is debts and charm.
  • Ellington Baxter: Lieutenant commander, callsign Professor, a former university lecturer who still teaches in the mess.
  • Tasha Severskya: Ensign and Joker 3, a Yuktobanian Zvezda aerobatic star stuck on the ship after a publicity shoot.
  • William Coster: Lieutenant junior grade, callsign Noise, a rock fan who flies with a music player in the cockpit.

Kate Evans leads Queen Flight from the same carrier. Jessica Pike, the executive officer, has been pulling in civilians to keep the ship running. Between sorties you walk those decks in first-person scenes built in the game engine, talk to the squad, and look around the hangar instead of cutting to a map briefing.

In the air you can ping the flight with the directional pad: forward attack, dispersed attack, support, or special weapons clearance. Missions mix escorts, bombing runs, fleet defense and strikes on land battleships. Two control models sit on the options screen, a levelled-off standard setup and an expert mode that lets the jet roll however you want.

Cloudly Turns the Sky Into Cover

The plane list is the other half of the pitch. Bandai Namco is sending 30 aircraft in four jobs: fighters, multirole jets, attackers and electronic warfare planes. Credits from the campaign, including extra pay for optional goals, feed an aircraft tree that unlocks airframes, parts and special weapons. Before a sortie you pick a jet and spend those parts on handling, acceleration and targeting.

Named types already shown include the F-14A (the pre-order unlock), F-14D Super Tomcat, A-10C Thunderbolt II, F-35C Lightning II, EA-18G Growler, F-15C Eagle, F-4E Phantom II, Su-57 Felon, MiG-31B Foxhound and EA-6B Prowler. The tree is the long-term sink. Online, a Premium Ace Pass adds more, with Season 1’s paid track built around the ADFX-02 Morgan -PIXY- livery.

Cloudly is the piece the team keeps tying back to Ace Combat 7. Series director Kazutoki Kono has said he does not want prettier skies that do no work.

I personally am not particularly interested in improved visuals without improved functionality. In AC7, the effect of flying into clouds naturally sent signals to the player, and we are looking for similar visual features that allow players to naturally learn the game rules as they play repeatedly.

Kazutoki Kono, Ace Combat series director

Clouds stack by altitude, throw Brocken spectres and sunbeams, and wet the canopy when you punch into them. Contrails and smoke are meant to be readable the way a racing line is readable. Early reviews that posted on September 25 keep coming back to that sky, and they split on the carrier drama around it: the dogfights and the clouds are the easy praise, the first-person soap is the argument.

Xbox’s Path From Ace Combat 6 to Zero

Xbox is not a tourist here. Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation shipped in 2007 as an Xbox 360 exclusive, the first mainline game that skipped PlayStation, and it still runs on Xbox One and Series consoles through backward compatibility. Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown then launched January 18, 2019 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with PC a couple of weeks later. Bandai Namco said in June 2026 that Skies Unknown had passed 7.5 million copies, which is why a three-platform Ace Combat 8 was always the likely bet.

HOW THE SERIES GOT TO THIS LAUNCH

  1. 2006: Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War ships on PlayStation 2, the origin story with the Ace Style gauge.
  2. 2007: Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation launches as an Xbox 360 exclusive.
  3. January 18, 2019: Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown opens on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, then PC on February 1.
  4. December 2025: Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is announced at The Game Awards for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam.
  5. October 2, 2026: Ace Combat 8 launches on those three platforms, with Zero bundled on digital pre-orders, including the first Xbox Series version of that 2006 campaign.

The pattern is blunt. When the series needs a new audience, it hands over an old war. Xbox players who stayed through Ace Combat 6 and 7 now get the one PlayStation 2 chapter the Series family never had, listed on the store as Ace Combat Zero on Xbox Series. PlayStation and Steam buyers get the same port, so the gift is not an Xbox exclusive. It is the first time that particular myth is sitting in the same store as Game Pass hardware.

Online Mode Runs on a 100-Player Air Base

Campaign and online do not share a save. You make a mercenary avatar, walk into an Air Base lobby that holds up to 100 players, and keep a separate rank. Cross-play is on across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Bandai Namco is calling this the largest online mode the series has shipped.

ACE COMBAT ONLINE AT LAUNCH

  • Co-Op Assault: Two teams of four chase score in PvE missions with mixed targets and goals.
  • Co-Op Warfare: Two teams of four fight each other and NPC units in a PvPvE score race built around Threat Level and Aces.
  • Emergency jobs: Four-player Scramble fights against a rival NPC squad, plus eight-pilot Emergency Sortie raids on colossal series weapons.
  • PvP events: Limited 4v4 team fights and 8-player deathmatch.

The lobby is a hangout with four-player training, a jukebox of older Ace Combat tracks, a mini arcade of classic Bandai Namco games, a supply shop and a separate Ace Combat Store. Playing online feeds Ace Pass XP. Deluxe’s Premium Ace Pass Plus voucher unlocks one season after launch and jumps you 30 levels, with skins, avatar clothes and that ADFX-02 Morgan -PIXY- waiting on the paid track. Seasons are slated for two months, and Bandai Namco says Premium aircraft will go on sale separately after their season ends.

That is a second product glued to the $69.99 disc. The campaign is the thing reviews can finish before October 2. The Air Base is the thing that has to stay full in November.

September 28 Opens Deluxe Access

A live-action prequel with Josh Holloway, Brandon Routh and Tamlyn Tomita started in four shorts on September 15 and is meant to wrap before launch. Press reviews of the game itself went up on September 25, which is why the last pre-order days feel loud: the combat footage is out, the Zero port is in critics’ hands, and the consumer unlock is still a timestamp.

Xbox’s own hands-on, written after Summer Game Fest Play Days, treated the first-person carrier life as the change that matters on the pad.

This cinematic storytelling is one of the biggest changes in years for the series, by telling its story from a first-person perspective it helps immerse you further in the moment-to-moment air combat drama.

Mike Nelson, Xbox Wire Editor, Summer Game Fest Play Days

The Deluxe Edition starts September 28 at 3:00 p.m. PDT for that $89.99 tier. Standard buyers wait until October 2. Pre-order Zero and the F-14A on either tier, or skip the bundle and pay $69.99 later without the 2006 campaign. For Xbox, that is the fork: a new numbered Ace Combat on Series hardware, and a PlayStation 2 origin war that has never been here, dropped in as the price of ordering before the doors open.
