Infinity Ward Bets a Paid DMZ Will Stick This Time
Infinity Ward is betting Modern Warfare 4’s paid DMZ and operator revival costs can hold players after the free 2022 beta was parked.
Infinity Ward is putting Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ behind the full game’s price, and a dead operator now costs money to revive. The extraction mode that launched free with Modern Warfare II in 2022 arrives on October 23, 2026 as a paid third pillar, with its own Level 1 to 70 track, a growing Forward Operating Base, and loot that can vanish for good.
That is a wager, not a playlist refresh. The last version was parked when it stopped making the seasonal calendar, and the studio is asking buyers to fund the sequel.
Infinity Ward Parked the First DMZ in 2023
The original DMZ shipped in 2022 as a free beta tied to Warzone, running on Al Mazrah and later Ashika Island, Vondel, Building 21, and the Koschei Complex. It had a loyal slice of the player base and almost none of the seasonal oxygen Warzone and Multiplayer got. By late 2023 the studio was already calling it a beta in public notes, which is how a live mode starts to sound temporary.
On November 30, 2023, Activision published the Season 1 note that stopped DMZ updates. New content ended with Modern Warfare III Season 1 on December 6, 2023. Progression no longer synced with Modern Warfare III or Warzone, and DMZ XP no longer counted toward new Battle Passes. The maps stayed up through the Warzone section of COD HQ, which is how you still boot the 2022 version in 2026 if you want a reminder of what got left behind.
We felt now was the time to take all the learnings from the Beta that we could apply toward future development efforts as we evolve this style of play.
Activision, Season 1 announcement, November 30, 2023
Jack O’Hara and Mark Grigsby, Infinity Ward’s co-studio heads, have since said that first build launched unfinished. Geoff Smith, the studio’s multiplayer creative director, put the redo in plainer words after a studio visit: “We actually made a proper DMZ this time. We had a little bit more time.” The mothball note had already promised that teams would keep evolving “dynamic open world experiences.” The wait was the product cycle between that Season 1 and Modern Warfare 4.
THE FIRST DMZ TIMELINE
- 2022: DMZ launches as a free Modern Warfare II beta on Warzone maps, with extract-or-lose loot and faction missions.
- November 30, 2023: Activision says new DMZ content stops and Battle Pass progress no longer applies.
- December 6, 2023: Season 1 goes live. The beta remains playable in COD HQ with no fresh maps or seasonal track.
- May 28, 2026: Infinity Ward confirms DMZ as Modern Warfare 4’s third mode, beside Campaign and Multiplayer.
- June 6, 2026: The studio publishes the first Hajin deep dive and frames the mode as a persistent extraction sandbox.
- October 5, 2026: From the Ward Episode 7 and the Hajin intel blog spell out the FOB, threat ratings, and the Level 1 to 70 track.
- October 23, 2026: Modern Warfare 4 launches with DMZ in the box, not as a free Warzone playlist.
The 2022 maps are still there for anyone who never uninstalled them. They are also the control group for this bet. A mode can stay technically playable and still be dead as a product, which is the lesson Infinity Ward is now trying to unwrite.
Hajin Is the Map This Wager Runs On
DMZ now has its own geography. Hajin sits in a tri-point region on the border of Russia and the Korean peninsula, after the campaign’s fight for Hajin City and a reactor meltdown that leaves a radioactive exclusion zone. You deploy as an off-the-books CIA asset, self-funded, to pull military tech out before someone else does. Joe Cecot, Infinity Ward’s multiplayer creative director, said other rogue operators will be in the same space, and you can work with them or take them out.
O’Hara’s pitch to campaign players is blunt. “We want you, if you’re interested in the Modern Warfare universe, to feel like once you finish the campaign, heading into DMZ is the next logical choice,” he said. Story missions continue characters and locations from that campaign, including the city you defended as a Marine. Dynamic Operations throw multi-step jobs into each match. Free Roam skips a briefing and lets you wander Hajin City. Those are the three deployment options into Hajin before the heavy-lift helicopter leaves the razor wire.
The official Call of Duty account put the first public look at that map on June 7, 2026, during the Xbox Showcase, and called it a high-stakes extraction experience arriving October 23 as part of Modern Warfare 4.

Weather is part of the board. Downpours cut visibility. Fog and overcast skies turn known routes into navigation jobs. An irradiated eastern sector needs a gas mask. Infinity Ward has also said post-launch seasons can change the map and rotate weather, which is how you keep a large zone from going stale after players memorize the loot closets.
Districts do not share one danger rating. The studio’s Hajin environments and threat intel guide tags pockets of the map from Low through Extreme, and those ratings can climb if you make noise.
HAJIN THREAT RATINGS IN THE INTEL BLOG
| Location | Listed threat |
|---|---|
| Cheongun Village | Low |
| Heavenly Luck Casino | High |
| The Grid | Critical |
| DBN Headquarters | Critical |
| Nenshin Tech Complex | Extreme |
The same guide walks major points of interest that campaign players will recognize on a second pass, including the 14th Political Prison, Chang-san Air Base, Haneul Nuclear Reactor, NuriGO Mall, Songdo Wharf, Wolves Stadium, and Hajin River Heights. Vehicles cover land, water, and air, with gas stations for repair and fuel. An RHIB handles the waterways. Helicopters cut the long crossings. The map is also scheduled to land in Warzone as a battle royale setting in Season 1, so the art budget is not riding on DMZ population alone.
A 70-Level Track Builds the Forward Operating Base
Between raids you do not dump into a menu and vanish. The Forward Operating Base is the hub, and it starts small. Operators, a Stash and Loadout, DMZ Orders, a firing range in a wooded grove with targets past 100 meters, and Survival Kits are up from the first successful stretch. Keep extracting and the foothold grows into a base with over a dozen stations.
Every deployment feeds a dedicated DMZ player level that runs from Level 1 to 70. That track unlocks printer recipes, new stations, and the rest of the hub’s kit. Looting containers is one of the reliable XP sources. Completing Orders, Dynamic Operations, and Lieutenant hunts is another. The after-action report scores combat, looting, and objectives and pushes you toward an S-tier rating. Supply Drops from completed Operations climb in rarity the longer a squad strings them together in one raid.
FOB STATIONS IN THE LAUNCH INTEL
- 3D Printer: Turns printer resources and ingredients into gear and is also the tool that upgrades other stations.
- Gunsmith: Spends DMZ Cash on attachments for looted guns, and builds new weapons from extracted Weapon Manuals.
- Vendor: Sells rotating weapons and kit for DMZ Cash, with stock that changes day to day.
- Bounty Leaderboard: Tracks the operators who are farming other players across Hajin.
- Boss Board: Sells intel on Lieutenants and lists Commander targets before you hunt them.
- Dog Tag Case: Displays tags taken off defeated operators, with a favorite slot for tags you do not want to lose.
- DMZ Progression: The Level 1 to 70 ladder that unlocks stations and printer recipes as you climb.
The Stash is the quiet change that makes the printer matter. Weapons, gear, and ingredients sit there between raids instead of evaporating at the extract screen. Loadouts are built from what you actually carried out. A full FOB station tour was still due later in the week of October 5, covering operator Prestige, Permanent Prestige Traits, and the printer’s full recipe list. Until that post lands, the published station list is the working map of the economy.
Dead Operators Come Back Only for a Price
O’Hara said fans were clear that the first DMZ did not hurt enough when you died. The studio’s answer is personal, and it sits on the operator, not on a shared account level. You build and rank a character, spend trait points on that person, and send them through the razor wire. If they go down, it costs you to bring them back.
Items can be gone for good if you die on them or drop them. That is the Tarkov-style pressure CoD mostly avoided in 2022, when insured weapons and a softer loss loop kept the mode closer to Warzone with chores. Armor plates, consumables, and gear are the obvious printer outputs. Gameplay menus also show what looks like streaks or AI fire support, though the intel blogs have not locked those recipes in writing.
O’Hara has also said extraction games are a rough first hour, because the opening memory is often death and loss. Story Missions are the on-ramp he is counting on, a scripted reason to go back in after a wipe. You can still earn DMZ XP from a failed raid in the sense that every deployment feeds the Level 1 to 70 track. The operator you liked, and the bag you filled, are the parts that can stay on the floor.
Dog tags make that loss visible. The case at the FOB is a trophy shelf and a warning label. Favorite the tags you want to keep. Leave the rest exposed to the same permanence as a purple card you never extracted. That is the stake O’Hara said was missing, and it is also the churn risk. A revival fee that feels fair in week one can feel like a tax once the printer queue and the Lieutenant loot are the whole hobby.
The Design Brief Is Constant Danger
Cecot’s team is calling the mode an “action extraction shooter,” which is a shot at the quiet loot walk that defined a lot of 2022 raids. The June intel says Hajin is built so you do not spend long opening boxes with nothing hunting you. AI holds ground in squads, rides convoys, and flies patrols. Approach a lone fighter and the studio wants that fighter to take cover, freeze, or break line of sight instead of jogging into your muzzle.
The enemy list in that blog is the part that will sort timid squads from loud ones. Lieutenants run specialized units. Commanders include tanks, drone swarms, Deathstalker helicopters, Juggernauts, and Elite Strike Teams. Drones, vehicle patrols, and attack helicopters sit under that ceiling. As the local threat rating climbs, heavier troops and Deathstalkers get sent to find you. Play loud and the map starts looking for you. Play with suppressors, melee takedowns, and patience, and you can keep the extreme responses off your back.
Solo players get a Stealth Meter that shifts from white to yellow to orange as an AI starts to notice you, with an audio cue when you are close to being made. Hit the dirt or get back into cover and you can still abort the alert. That meter is the studio admitting the 2022 complaint in software: too many raids were either empty or instantly doomed, with not enough in between.
The original reveal said solo queues would only match with other solos. Fresh reads of the new intel suggest that wall is not the rule this time, which would mix one-person raids into the same Hajin instance as stacked squads. If that holds, the “action” label is not only about denser AI. It is about other humans showing up on the same ridge while you are still looting a hospital.
Extraction Shooters Already Had a Mainstream Year
Infinity Ward is not introducing this genre. Escape from Tarkov spent years as the hardcore reference. Hunt: Showdown held the weird, tense lane. Arc Raiders is the 2025 title that pulled a much wider audience into extract-or-lose raids, and Bungie’s Marathon is the other big-studio attempt sitting on the same shelf. CoD’s version is the one that uses gun handling millions of people already know, then asks them to care about a bag.
That is the open part of the wager. A Call of Duty annual can put a new mode in front of people who will never install Tarkov. It can also bore the players who wanted a slower hunt, because Cecot is promising fewer dead minutes. O’Hara has already said DMZ does not replace battle royale, which is a reminder that Warzone still sits in the same launcher and will inherit Hajin in Season 1. The extraction playlist has to win hours against that, not only against Marathon.
The FOB is being built like an old Headquarters lobby, a walkable base with a printer and a dog-tag wall instead of a tile menu. That nostalgia is useful on launch weekend. It does not answer the 2023 problem, which was never the lobby. It was the calendar. When the seasonal team moved on, the raids emptied, and the remaining players were left with a museum.
Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Is Not Free to Play
The 2022 beta was a free Warzone download. Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ requires the base game. Vault Edition still dangles a DMZ Deployment Bonus next to BlackCell and operator packs, and eligible owners of a 2019-or-later Call of Duty title can take 10% off that Vault pre-order. Campaign early access for Standard Digital and Vault pre-orders starts October 16, 2026. The full game, with DMZ, is October 23 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo, and PC through Steam, Battle.net, and the Microsoft Store.
THE TWO DMZ PRODUCTS
| 2022 DMZ beta | Modern Warfare 4 DMZ | |
|---|---|---|
| Access | Free through Warzone | Requires Modern Warfare 4 |
| New content | Stopped December 6, 2023 | Launch pillar on October 23, 2026 |
| Maps | Al Mazrah, Ashika Island, Vondel, Building 21, Koschei Complex | Hajin exclusion zone |
| Progression | Cut off from later Battle Passes | Dedicated Level 1 to 70 track |
| Hub | Menus and a lighter stash loop | FOB with over a dozen stations |
| On death | Softer insured-weapon loop | Operator revival cost and permanent item loss |
Putting the mode in the box shrinks the pool and raises the obligation. A free playlist can be ignored for a season. A $70-class campaign-plus-multiplayer release that advertises DMZ as a third pillar looks unfinished if Hajin goes quiet in January. That is why the intel keeps promising map changes, seasonal weather, new bosses, and extra content in later updates. It is also why the FOB tour still in the pipeline matters. Players who buy this for the printer and the Lieutenant hunts will want to know the recipe list is real, not a loading-screen mockup.
The old beta remains a living comparison, still bootable, still unfinished, still free. Modern Warfare 4 has to beat that memory with a mode people will pay to die in, then pay again to get their operator back. Launch day is October 23, 2026. The full station-by-station FOB guide was promised after the October 5 dump, and that post is the next piece of paper the wager has to put on the table.
