Fold 8 Sales Rise 10% on Korea’s Million-Won Gap
Galaxy Z Fold 8 sales rose about 10% in Korea after the iPhone Duo launch, a jump tied to local prices and an October wait.
Galaxy Z Fold 8 sales in South Korea rose about 10 percent in the week after Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo, the telecommunications industry said on September 17. Some buyers who had waited for Apple’s first foldable then bought Samsung’s instead.
The same two 256GB phones sit about $100 apart in the United States. In Korea they sit 1,011,900 won apart, and the Duo does not go on sale until October 23.
A Million Won Separates the Same Two Phones
Apple set the iPhone Duo at $1,999 in the United States for 256GB. Korean list price for that model is 3.29 million won (US$2,380). The 2TB Duo is 5.09 million won, the highest iPhone price Apple has posted in the country.
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 256GB is 2,278,100 won in Korea. That is 1,011,900 won below the Duo at the same storage. U.S. list prices put the Fold 8 at $1,899, $100 under the Duo. The hardware is comparable. The checkout math is not.
KOREA VERSUS THE UNITED STATES
| 256GB model | South Korea | United States |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Z Fold 8 | 2,278,100 won | $1,899 |
| iPhone Duo | 3.29 million won | $1,999 |
| Gap | 1,011,900 won | about $100 |
Samsung has said it keeps Galaxy prices lowest at home. Apple’s Korean Duo ticket includes value-added tax and the usual iPhone FX markup, and the spread is wide enough that a waiter comparing the two sheets is not looking at a rounding error. In the United States the gap is a storage bump. In Seoul it is a second mid-range phone.
The Five-Week Gap Apple Built Into Korea
Apple unveiled the Duo on September 9 in Cupertino, which was September 10 in Korea. Pre-orders begin Friday, October 16, with availability on Friday, October 23, in more than 70 countries, South Korea included. That is 43 days from the Korean unveil to a box on a shelf.
The Fold 8 has been on sale since August. Samsung opened Korean pre-orders on July 28, took them through August 3, and started general availability starting August 7. A buyer who wants a book-style foldable in September can walk out with one. A buyer who wants the Duo cannot.
THE ROAD TO OCTOBER 23
- July 22, 2026: Samsung unveils the Galaxy Z Fold 8 in London.
- July 28 to August 3, 2026: Korean pre-orders for the Z8 series reach 1.44 million.
- August 7, 2026: Fold 8 sales open in South Korea.
- September 2, 2026: Samsung starts Welcome to Foldables outdoor ads.
- September 9, 2026: Apple unveils the iPhone Duo.
- September 10 to 16, 2026: Fold 8 Korean sales rise about 10 percent from the prior week.
- October 16, 2026: Duo pre-orders open at 5 a.m. PT, 9 p.m. in Korea.
- October 23, 2026: Duo sales begin.
Industry accounts in Seoul also flagged the wait itself. Once the Duo’s Korean on-sale window landed at the end of October, sitting out another month became a decision, not a default.
Why Galaxy Z Fold 8 Sales Rose 10%
South Korea’s telecommunications industry said Fold 8 sales rose about 10 percent in the first week after the September 10 unveil, versus the week before. The figure is a weekly carrier tally, not a Samsung filing, and it covers a phone that had already been selling for more than a month.
The read from those accounts is that part of the waiting demand moved. People who held a Fold 8 purchase to see Apple’s sheet then chose Samsung after the price, the thickness, and the ship date were public. Hardware comparisons sat next to the price on that list.
That 10 percent sits on a large base. Samsung said the Z8 series, the Fold 8, Fold 8 Ultra, and Flip 8, took 1.44 million Korean pre-orders in seven days, about 140 devices a minute. That beat the Galaxy Note 10’s 1.38 million, the Galaxy S26 series at 1.35 million, and last year’s Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 at 1.04 million. The Fold 8 took about 70 percent of those Z8 pre-orders.
Counterpoint Research’s weekly tracker is a different cut. It found Z8 series sales in the first two weeks after the August 7 launch ran 8 percent higher than the Z Fold 7 in the same window a year earlier. Associate director Sujeong Lim estimated the Fold 8 at roughly 57 percent of those series sales, a global mix, not the Korean pre-order split. Samsung also said the share of iOS users moving to the Fold 8 series was 1.6 times the prior generation.
The Welcome Campaign Ran Before Apple Spoke
Samsung did not treat the Duo week as a surprise. From September 2 it ran Welcome to Foldables digital ads at six landmarks, starting at KT Square in Gwanghwamun, then COEX in Seoul, Shibuya Station in Tokyo, and Piccadilly Circus and Outernet in London. The spots pushed three lines: ultra thin, the world’s lightest fold, and built to outlast. The company said the Z8 series is on sale in 106 markets.
Minutes after the Cupertino event, Samsung Mobile US posted the line it had been winding up to.

Apple’s pitch was the other way: first foldable, thinnest iPhone when open, largest iPhone display, titanium, a hinge with more than 100 parts. CEO John Ternus put it in launch language.
iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original. With an entirely new design and intuitive experiences, it shows what’s possible when hardware and software are engineered together and redefines what it means to use a foldable phone.

The Korean industry take after that event was blunter. Apple’s arrival itself raised interest in the category. Samsung’s outdoor copy had already said welcome. The first week of numbers then went to the phone that was in stores.
Fold 8 Wins on Weight and Thickness
Published specs put the iPhone Duo at 254 grams, 11.3 mm folded and 5.2 mm open. The Fold 8 is 201 grams, 9.7 mm folded and 4.5 mm open. That is 53 grams, 1.6 mm closed, and 0.7 mm open. Both open to a 7.6-inch inner panel. The Fold 8’s cover is 5.5 inches; the Duo’s is 5.4 inches, which Apple says is 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro.
WHAT A POCKET ACTUALLY HOLDS
- Weight: The Fold 8 is 53 grams lighter than the Duo at 201 grams versus 254 grams.
- Closed thickness: The Fold 8 is 9.7 mm folded; the Duo is 11.3 mm.
- Open thickness: The Fold 8 is 4.5 mm; Apple’s open Duo is 5.2 mm, still the thinnest iPhone it has shipped.
- In-stock status: The Fold 8 is on shelves; the Duo is a pre-order on October 16.
Weight is the complaint that keeps coming back in hands-on talk, because a foldable is a large screen you still carry like a phone. Apple can point to grade 5 titanium, Ceramic Shield, IP68, and a hinge built to feel solid. Those are real. They do not cancel 53 grams in a jacket pocket, and they do not cancel a five-week wait.
Apple Still Gets a 25% Forecast With Zero Sales
None of the Korean weekly print is a 2026 share table. Counterpoint Research’s August update, issued on September 7, still puts Samsung at 38 percent of foldable shipments this year, Apple at 25 percent, and Huawei at 22 percent. It forecasts up to 6 million foldable iPhone shipments in a short selling window, and a lifetime category total past 100 million units by year-end. It also sees 37 percent category growth in 2027.
That 25 percent assumes supply ramps after this month’s unveil, not a wipeout in Seoul during week one. Ice Universe, the mobile analyst, wrote on September 15 that Duo sales would easily kill the Z Fold 8. He was talking about sell-through once Apple is shipping, not about a Korean week when Apple is not.
iPhone software still pulls people who never intended to leave it. Korean accounts that logged the 10 percent rise also said it is too early to read the market from an initial flow, because the Duo is not on sale and because buyers who live in Apple’s apps have not had a chance to pay yet.
October 23 Is When the Wait Ends
The useful Korean fact is narrower than a winner’s headline. In a market where Samsung discounts its own foldable and Apple does not, a public spec dump became a sale for the phone already on the shelf. The U.S. sheet, $100 apart, does not force that move.
Pre-orders open October 16. Sales start October 23. That is when the same two phones can be held, weighed, and paid for in the same week, and when the 10 percent print either holds up or gets spent back.
