Sami Zayn Keeps the Title Only With Help From His Rivals

Sami Zayn retained the Undisputed WWE Championship on night 7 only after Gargano, LeRae, and Punk hit the Owens match.

Sami Zayn retained the Undisputed WWE Championship against Kevin Owens on Sept. 18 after CM Punk struck Owens with the title. The SmackDown defense came seven days after Zayn beat Punk, and it only closed once Johnny Gargano, Candice LeRae, and Punk had all touched the match.

Nick Aldis booked that fight minutes after Zayn grabbed him in the ring and asked whether this reign could last past seven days. In Corpus Christi, the new champion needed the same people circling the belt just to clear the test.

A Seven-Day Clock Starts in Corpus Christi

The show opened at the 10,000-seat Hilliard Center Arena, the same Corpus Christi building that carried the American Bank Center name until Sept. 1, 2025. Aldis told the crowd that some people in his job rub him the wrong way, then introduced Undisputed WWE Champion Sami Zayn to a mix that leaned toward boos.

Zayn was not amused. He said the title sounded good in his own mouth, then tried to sell the boos as part of the same fight.

Justice for Sami isn’t just about him, it’s about all the fans, even the ones booing him right now.

He asked Aldis for equality, meaning the next person knocking on the door should get the same kind of shot Zayn got. Gargano walked out with LeRae and claimed that shot, saying Zayn had promised him first crack after the title change. Zayn said they never made a deal. Aldis cut in and said the champion does not make the matches, and that Gargano already had a title match in his hometown two weeks earlier. The man Aldis called next in line, Punk, was not in the building. Then Owens was.

Owens stunned Gargano, talked himself up as the future, and dragged up Toronto, where Zayn had cost him a title opportunity. When Zayn put his hands on the GM’s blazer, Aldis made Zayn versus Owens for later that night. He also put a number on the reign. Zayn’s nine-day first championship reign in June ended on July 6, when Punk beat him on Raw. Aldis wanted to know if this one could get past seven.

THE 2026 TITLE CLOCK

  1. June 27, 2026: Zayn wins the Undisputed WWE Championship at Night of Champions, beating Cody Rhodes and Gunther.
  2. July 6, 2026: Punk beats Zayn on Raw and ends the first reign at nine days.
  3. Sept. 11, 2026: Zayn beats Punk on SmackDown and becomes a two-time champion.
  4. Sept. 18, 2026: Zayn defends against Owens seven days later in Corpus Christi.

Randy Orton met Zayn on the ramp for a short staredown, then headed to the ring for the first Money in the Bank qualifier, as if the title picture was already too crowded for one segment.

Trick Williams Pins Fenix After the RKO

United States Champion Trick Williams, AAA Cruiserweight Champion Rey Fenix, and Orton opened the ladder race on SmackDown in a triple threat. Orton blindsided Fenix, then dumped both men onto the announce table. Lil Yachty came over to confront him and ate a thumb to the eye and a backdrop onto the same table, a hangover from Baron Corbin’s attack on Yachty a week earlier.

Fenix hit Goodbye Amigo on Orton and kept finding nearfalls, including a moonsault and a frog splash attempt. Orton caught that splash with an RKO. Williams hit the Trick Shot on Orton and pinned Fenix, which is how a United States champion became the third man in the men’s ladder match.

Backstage, Zayn found Gargano and LeRae still waiting on the promise Johnny thought he had. Zayn told them he has to keep the title, because if it leaves him there might not be another shot for Gargano. Johnny said he could see it. They agreed to talk later. That talk would finish in the main event, with Gargano’s hands on the match instead of on a contract.

Haku’s Cane Turns a Tag Win Into a Disqualification

WWE Tag Team Champions the MFTs, Tama Tonga and Talla Tonga, with Haku, met Bakusai, Shinsuke Nakamura and Kyoki, in a non-title match that was supposed to stay in the ring. Kyoki spent the early minutes dragging Talla off the apron and sending both champions to the floor. Nakamura’s second-rope knee and a near Kinshasa had Talla in trouble.

Haku ended the argument with a walking stick. He hit Nakamura on the floor, the referee called for the bell, and Bakusai got the win by disqualification. Haku then drove the stick into Nakamura’s throat with the steps while the Tongans laid Bakusai out. The champions did not need the fall. They left with the picture they wanted.

Jacy Jayne Beats Cargill and Bliss to Qualify

Women’s United States Champion Jacy Jayne, Jade Cargill, and Alexa Bliss met in the women’s qualifier, after Tatum Paxley had handed Charlotte Flair luck candles that Flair promptly ruined. Bliss yanked Jayne off the announce table and later hit a cannonball to the floor. Cargill broke up a Sister Abigail pin, then turned another Abigail into Jaded. Jayne broke that cover, dumped Cargill, and pinned Bliss.

Fatal Influence met her for the celebration. The win put a current United States champion in each ladder match on the same night, and it left Cargill and Bliss as the names who came close and still went home. Giulia, asked about her own qualifier, told Lash Legend she would kick her teeth out. That fight, with Charlotte Flair added, is now on the Sept. 25 SmackDown.

Cody Rhodes Will Not Repeat His Orton Choice

Michael Cole sat Rhodes down after Saturday Night’s Main Event, where Rhodes could not beat Orton. Rhodes said everyone who helped him celebrate finishing his story at WrestleMania 40 has since stabbed him in the back. He still called himself QB1 on a large roster, and he said he has been uncompromised since he returned at WrestleMania 38.

Cole asked what happens the next time he sees Orton. Rhodes said the SNME situation will happen again, and that when it does he will not make the same decision. It was the one segment on the show that did not ask the title for oxygen. It also left Orton, who had just lost a qualifier, as the man Rhodes is still building toward.

Money in the Bank Is Halfway to New Orleans

Qualifying started on the Sept. 7 Raw, when Bron Breakker and Sol Ruca won the first two spots. Je’Von Evans and Lola Vice joined them on Sept. 14. Friday’s SmackDown filled the third slot on each side. Each ladder match is a six-person field, so three spots remain in each before WWE goes to New Orleans.

THE LADDER FIELD AFTER SEPT. 18

Wrestler Ladder match Qualified
Bron Breakker Men’s Sept. 7, Raw
Je’Von Evans Men’s Sept. 14, Raw
Trick Williams Men’s Sept. 18, SmackDown
Sol Ruca Women’s Sept. 7, Raw
Lola Vice Women’s Sept. 14, Raw
Jacy Jayne Women’s Sept. 18, SmackDown

WWE will hold Money in the Bank on Oct. 10 at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, with Roman Reigns defending the World Heavyweight Championship against LA Knight already advertised. Finn Balor told Owens backstage that he wants the next title shot and will take the long way if he has to, even if that means winning the briefcase. On Sept. 25, Balor meets Punk and Gunther in the next men’s qualifier, which is how a man who just lost the title gets a ladder instead of a rematch.

Gargano, LeRae, and Punk Keep Zayn Champion

Owens had said the Hilliard Center was where he would beat Zayn, because it was where he beat John Cena in his first WWE match. That was May 31, 2015, at Elimination Chamber, when Owens was NXT Champion and Cena was United States Champion, and the finish was a Pop-up Powerbomb. He opened this one the same way he opens most of them, by hitting Zayn at the bell and taking him to the floor.

The Opening Bell Belongs to Owens

Owens hung Zayn on the barricade, drove him ribs-first into the top rope, and later hit a cannonball for a nearfall. He copied Cena again with the You Can’t See Me taunt and an Attitude Adjustment for two. Zayn found a Blue Thunder Bomb. Owens missed a Swanton’s three-count. For a long stretch it was the match Owens asked for, two friends trying to end a title reign in the building where one of them became a main-roster problem.

Everyone Else Finishes the Match

Then the rest of the opening segment climbed in. The Gargano save was sitting in plain sight from the moment Johnny walked out with a microphone. LeRae’s tornado DDT, Gargano’s hands on the pin, and Punk’s title shot were the actual finish, not the wrestling that came before them.

WHO TOUCHED THE TITLE MATCH

  • Candice LeRae: She hit Owens with a tornado DDT behind the referee, which set up Zayn’s first Helluva Kick nearfall.
  • Johnny Gargano: He broke Owens’s pin after a pop-up powerbomb and a Stunner, then ate a Stunner of his own when Owens had seen enough.
  • Kevin Owens: He put Zayn through the announce table and still had to kick out after Punk’s belt shot.
  • CM Punk: He hit Owens with the WWE Title while LeRae held the referee’s attention, then stayed for the last word.

The official SmackDown recap of the title match credits Punk’s belt shot with giving Zayn the opening for the Helluva Kick that scored the pin. After the belt shot, the referee hesitated on a cover before that kick landed, which made a crowded finish look even more crowded. Zayn crawled over for the three and kept the championship. He did not get to hold it up.

Punk dropped Zayn with a GTS, then dropped Owens with another, and walked off as SmackDown went out. The champion who asked for equality left on his back. The man Aldis had called next in line closed the show standing, and the briefcase in New Orleans is now the cleanest way for anyone in that pile to skip the line Punk just rejoined.
